Work Permit Inside Canada

There are different type of work permit which an applicant can apply for according to condition and qualification. To obtain your temporary work permit, basic eligibility requirements are:

  • You are currently residing in Canada and hold a valid study, or work permit or your spouse or parents have a valid study or work permit
  • Graduated from a Canadian college or university
  • Have a temporary resident permit valid for at least six months
  • Waiting for CIC to process your permanent residence application.

There are many different kind of work permit

  • Graduate work Permit
    After successful completion of college education from designated college or institute applicant is eligible to get minimum of one year of work permit or maximum of 3 years.
  • Closed work permit
    One can get closed work permit as a result of Positive LMIA (formerly known as LMO labour market opinion)
  • Bridging Work Permit
    If applicant already got approved by Province Nomination or already applied for Permanent residence file than one can extent their work permit.

Work Permit for Caregiver

The caregiver program allows temporary residents with a caregiver work permit, and caregivers who are approved for their caregiver work permit based on an employer’s positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) application before November 30, 2014, to become a permanent resident of Canada.

Following are the requirements for the caregiver program:

  • Must be able to obtain a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from a Canadian employer
  • A written employment contract describing job duties, hours of work, wages, accommodation arrangements, medical insurance coverage from the date of arrival until eligible to obtain provincial health insurance, and termination and resignation terms
  • Canadian diploma or degree or equivalent foreign studies
  • A minimum of six months’ training or one year of full-time work experience as a caregiver
  • Language proficiency test in English or French
  • A work permit before entering Canada.

Work Permit for Post Graduate

For International Students after their studies can apply for Post Graduate work permit In Canada 

You may be eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) if you graduated from a  Designated Learning institution which is one the accepted post-secondary institute for the post-graduation work permit. This allows students to stay for a longer time who want to stay in Canada temporary for work.

International students can only receive one Post-Graduation Work Permit from IRCC, so it’s important to take advantage of that opportunity. 

Find out if you are eligible for a PGWP

To be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, international students must have:

  • Completed studies in Canada at least of eight months long at an eligible Post-Secondary Institute
    • Study programs must lead to a degree, diploma or certificate.
  • Should behave full-time student status in Canada during every semester of the program or programs of study completed and included as part of their post-graduation work permit application; 
  • Provide proof of completion of the program by submitting a transcript and an official letter from the institute;  
  • The transcript and official letter must be included in a post-graduation work permit application.

Deadline to Apply: 180 Days after obtaining a transcript

Ineligible Applicants

International students are ineligible to apply if they: 

  • have previously been issued a post-graduation work permit
  • received funding from Global Affairs Canada (GAC)
  • participated in the Government of Canada Awards Program funded by GAC
  • obtained the Equal Opportunity Scholarship, Canada–Chile
  • participated in the Canada–China Scholars’ Exchange Program
  • participated in the Organization of American States Fellowships Program
  • completed the majority of the credits toward the completion of their program of study by distance learning
  • completed a program of study delivered by a non-Canadian institution located in Canada, regardless of the length of stay in Canada.
